Get to Know Us: Attorney Scott Barr

Where do you live? 
I live on the north side of Appleton

Where are you from?
I was born in West Allis and grew up in Deerfield, Wisconsin, just outside of Madison.

My legal practice…
I am actively involved in assisting business owners and executives in a variety of business transactions, from formations of start-up organizations to mergers and acquisitions of business assets and enterprises.  I regularly help contractors, owners and architects in the preparation of contract documents and the resolution of disputes arising from the construction process.  I’ve represented clients on a wide variety of projects both regionally and nationally, playing a lead role from small projects to projects over a billion dollars, working on contract drafting, contract negotiations, and the legal aspects of project management.

My family…
My wife, Barbara, is an HR professional at Valmet, an international company (based in Finland) that manufactures paper-making equipment.   She’s artistic and brilliant and makes me laugh a lot.

What part of your job is your favorite?
I really enjoy using the experience and knowledge that I have developed over the last 30 years to help clients resolve their questions.

What are three things you do every day? 
I stretch every day.  I think about racing every day.  I take some time to just be quiet every day.

What is your secret talent?
I’m a reasonably good race car driver, for a middle-aged amateur.  And I make a good margarita.  These two things are more connected than you might think.

What is your favorite activity when you are not at work?
I’d like to come up with something that doesn’t make me sound like I’m obsessed with racing, but….my favorite activity while not at work is racing.  I also run – a lot – but I do that so that I can be better at racing.  And I love to read, and I read quite a few books about racing.

What is your least favorite activity when you are not at work?
I am not fond of grocery shopping.

Where is your favorite place in the world?
Blackhawk Farms Raceway, Rockton, IL.

What is the last book you read?
I just read “Vacationland” by John Hodgman and before that, I re-read “The Long Goodbye” by Raymond Chandler.

If you could trade jobs with one person for one day, who would it be?
Lewis Hamilton.

My favorite part of working at McCarty Law is…
In addition to the enjoyment I get out of applying what I know to help people solve knotty issues, I really like working with a group of fun people who I like and respect so much.
