McCarty Law Step Up Challenge Winter 2018

This long winter did not stop the McCarty Law team from getting in their steps. Hosted by the office Wellness Committee, more than 25 steppers accepted the challenge to reach 10,000 daily steps and a bonus challenge of drinking 6-8 glasses of water per day through the months of February and March. The competition was steep! “Steppers” did all they could to get in those extra steps, including printing to the furthest-most office printer, home workout videos, gym visits, braving the cold to walk outside, and dizzying spouses, partners and friends by getting steps in circles inside their homes on the coldest days.

How It Worked

The Step Challenge lasted two months, from February 5 until April 1. All of the steppers contributed $10 per person at the start. With seven teams of four steppers, the jackpot reached $280! Each stepper tracked their daily steps, from morning until night, with the goal of reaching 10,000 steps per day. Each stepper could also earn bonus steps for each day they met a daily water goal of drinking 6-8 ounces of water. Steppers were randomly assigned to teams. The teams then designated a team captain to whom they reported their weekly step totals and number of days their water goal was met. The team captain then reported the weekly totals to the Wellness Committee. The first team to submit its  weekly totals by 9 am each Monday earned extra bonus steps for the team.

The winners of the McCarty Law Step Up Challenge

Team results were posted in the office lunchroom Monday afternoons so everyone knew where the competition stood.  The first, second and third place teams for the most steps earned for the entire month of February were rewarded a portion of February’s prize money, and the first place team won a healthy lunch party! Of the jackpot, $20 went to each stepper of the first place team, $15 went to each stepper of the second place team and $10 went to the third place team. The rest of the jackpot carried over into March.

Team results were posted in the office lunchroom Monday afternoons so everyone knew how each team is doing.  The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams for the most steps earned for the entire month of February were rewarded a portion of February’s prize money, and the 1st place team won a healthy lunch party! Of the jackpot, $20 went to each stepper of the first place team, $15 went to each stepper of the second place team and $10 went to the third place team.

A few teams did so well in February that it seemed they would be almost unbeatable by the end of March, so the Wellness Committee ramped up a new challenge for March. After paying out the winners from February, the Wellness Committee started fresh and picked new teams based on the steppers’ average steps in February.

Step Up Challenge 2.0

For the second half of the challenge, rather than each team accumulating steps throughout the entire month, the team that had the most steps for each week of March would win prize money. This way everyone had a fresh start each week and there were more opportunities to win.  There was also an individual challenge component. Each day during the month of March that a stepper achieved at least 10,000 steps, their name went into a drawing. Five names were picked from this drawing and some prize money was divided between them.

Our Takeaways

The Step Challenge was a great success! In the end, everyone was a winner when the first place team graciously shared their healthy lunch party with the entire office. As a result of the challenge, the McCarty Law team encouraged and motivated their colleagues to stay active and drink lots of water. Staying active in the cold winter can be difficult, but the Step Challenge helped to keep everyone moving.

The Wellness Committee will be at it again in the coming month with a weight loss and sugar reduction challenge! Stories from McCarty Law”s wellness challenges are to be continued…
